The move to Madrid
Michael Owen joined Real Madrid from Liverpool in August 2004, for a fee reported at around £8 million, becoming part of the club's "Galácticos" project alongside stars such as Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham.
How his season went
Owen's game time was limited by the sheer strength of Real Madrid's forward line, and he mostly appeared as an impact substitute. Despite restricted minutes, he still scored regularly given the chances he had, underlining his reputation as one of the most efficient finishers in Europe.
Return to England
After one season, Owen opted to return to the Premier League for regular first-team football, signing for Newcastle United in 2005 for a fee that made him Britain's most expensive player at the time.
